The Department of Mining Engineering was established in 1956 at College of Engineering, Osmania University, Hyderabad. This was the only institution offering Mining Engineering education in the entire South India.
In 1994, the Kothagudem School of Mines was taken over by Kakatiya University, Warangal from Osmania University in compliance with the ordinance 3 of 1994 promulgated by the Government of Andhra Pradesh.
